The community you will find at Montagne Verte is one of many different backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities. Diversity enriches us.
This Black History Month, we celebrate and honor the memory and legacy of two extremely well-accomplished individuals who came before us.
Madame C.J. Walker
(1867-1919)
The first black female millionaire in America. An entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist. Madame C.J. Walker. She was born, the first free child of parents who had been freed by the emancipation proclamation. She started with nothing, and built her life by facing her own personal challenges head on. Her success was matched only by her efforts to give back and bring her community along with her. She passed away in her home on the Hudson, not too far from Montagne Verte in 1919, though her legacy and impact continue to this day.
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges
(1745-1799)
The perfect gentleman, and a true prodigy. Widely considered one of the most accomplished men of Europe during his lifetime. A champion swordsman, a genius violinist, and a composer of such talent as to be referred to as the “black Mozart”. Despite his tremendous accomplishments and lasting legacy, many still do not know his name - Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Born in 1745, and living through one of the most consequential periods in France and all of Europe, his character, accomplishments and talents cannot be overstated. And for all of these reasons, we celebrate his life and honor his memory this Black History month.
